15 Years Maintenance of Critical Rotating and Reciprocating Equipment in One of the Largest Chemical Plants in the US

For over 20 years Sulzer Enpro has provided complete mechanical maintenance teams for rotating and reciprocating equipment in the USA and around the world. The variety of equipment involved ranges from small single stage centrifugal machinery to large axial compressors and hot gas expanders, as well as small to large steam and gas turbines and a wide range of reciprocating engines, compressors and integrals.

For over 15 years Sulzer Enpro has been the primary supplier of mechanical maintenance teams for minor inspections through to major overhauls of power generating trains and multiple trains of turbomachinery in the various chemical plants that make up one of the largest chemical complexes in South Louisiana. The power generating equipment at this location includes 50 to180 MW steam turbines, 70 MW European gas turbines and US- designed 50 MW and 100 MW gas turbines. Over the years this has involved complete turbine overhauls, combustor inspections, hot gas path inspections, generator overhauls, minor mechanical maintenance such as valve racks on steam turbines and all other aspects of routine and breakdown mechanical maintenance work.

The activities earlier this year included the complete major overhaul of type 11D5 gas turbines and the hot gas path inspection on a 501D5 gas turbine. The type 11D5 gas turbine job included a complete change out of the rotor and stationary carrier replaced with the customer’s spare components, as well as the overhaul of the intermediate gearbox, turning gear and shaft driven oil pump. The 501D5 gas turbine job included replacement of the row one and two turbine blades, row one and two turbine stationary blade rings and all of the combustor hardware with the customer’s spares, removal of the row three and four stationary blade rings for inspection of the row three and four turbine blades and removal of the compressor diaphragms for inspection and cleaning of the compressor. This work was accomplished on time with no health, safety or environmental issues. The hot parts removed from these turbines are routinely sent to our sister company, Sulzer Hickham USA in LaPorte, Texas, for repair.

This fall, as a part of the major turnaround and upgrade of a large hydrocarbon plant within this complex, Sulzer Enpro supplies a complete team of approximately 70 men to overhaul one 30,000 hp and two 60,000 hp mechanical drive steam turbines, the  overhaul of one medium size centrifugal compressor, ISO carbon seal/bearing change out on two large centrifugal compressors and the change out of another complete steam turbine and compressor train.

Sulzer Enpro provides customers with highly competent, quick response capability field service crews out of our Louisiana, Texas and Michigan based facilities and is capable of supplying a comprehensive range of well-proven and highly specialized support services for all types of rotating and reciprocating machinery.
