Sulzer publishes Sustainability Report

Sulzer today released its Sustainability Report 2009, which received the application level A+ of the Global Reporting Initiative. The company is committed to continuously improving its sustainability performance. The frequency of accidents was further reduced and hazardous waste production per net value added decreased.

Sustainability is a key factor for the success of Sulzer. The company is committed to creating long-term economic value, while proactively assuming its social and environmental responsibility. Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS) and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) confirmed that Sulzer reports according to the GRI G3 application level A+.

“With the increasing scarcity of resources, energy efficiency has become a growing need, and Sulzer solutions make a significant difference with combined economic and ecological advantages,” CEO Ton Büchner states in the Sustainability Report 2009. For instance, state-of-the-art pumps offer higher reliability and efficiency, and high-quality coatings for turbines reduce energy consumption. Sulzer is also working on new opportunities, such as solutions for non-food-based biofuels and thermal solar power, which help reduce dependency on fossil-based fuels.

In 2009, Sulzer further decreased the accident frequency rate by 25% to 5.6 accidents per million working hours. For 2010, the target has again been lowered to 4.5 with the long-term goal of zero accidents. The ecological footprint of Sulzer operations is closely monitored, in particular regarding energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. As a signatory member of the United Nations Global Compact, Sulzer is fully committed to its principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment, and anticorruption.
